Goods, foods, provisions and more, all at JJ’s; your country store.
JJ’s Mercantile provides everything from gifts, groceries and gear for the guests of the resort, campers, locals and those passing through. Named after Sorrel River Ranch and Spa’s owner Elizabeth Rad’s grandfather, JJ, the store pays homage to his hard-working spirit and the vision of Ms. Rad.
Born in 1898, JJ immigrated from Italy when he was 16. He taught himself the trumpet and became a band leader in Vaudeville. He later built a sales company for textiles, making honest deals with a handshake and smile. He was a jovial family man that only had eyes for his wife and his daughter, Ms. Rad’s mother. He always had a cigar in his mouth.
In later years, Ms. Rad traveled with her grandfather by train, he would not fly. “My grandfather taught me to work hard; to have pride in myself and my work. He taught me responsibility and accountability and basic business principals. He respected me and treated me like an adult at an early age. He valued kindness and honesty. I admire my grandfather and remember him every day.”
In the spirt of JJ, our country store offers simple, tasty baked goods, elevated comfort food on the go, classes and interactive events, kids playing games at sunset. All offered with hospitality, service with pride and a smile. This is JJs Mercantile, your country store!
Meet our Proprietress
JJs’ Proprietress, Midge Knerr, has always been involved with food, garden, hospitality and the arts. In the late 70’s she was one of the first women chefs in New York City; then chef in 3 successful restaurants in Newport, RI. Always developing menus with an eye on the farm as well as the classics. Her travels to France landed her on two stages-Paris and Cannes.
Managing a Victorian Inn gave her an additional appreciation of hospitality. In 2011, she ran The Lodge at the Stanley Hotel, overseeing the pastry kitchen, a popup restaurant, front desk operations and housekeeping. 2017 brought her to Sorrel River Ranch. After three years of JJ’s Mercantile preparation she is ready for business!
Farm fresh eggs, milk and butter; organic produce and flowers from Sorrel River’s gardens; saddlebag lunches and picnic baskets; jewelry and pottery workshops as well as painting and cooking classes for all ages round out many of JJs seasonal highlights.
